Day Services Center
Once people and families fall into the confusing world of homelessness, it is extraordinarily difficult to navigate their way out, on their own. The “cycle of homelessness” begins when their hope is lost, and hope is lost all too soon for persons who are homeless. In order to address the problem of homelessness – and to end the cycle of homelessness one person at a time – the Siena/Francis House operates our Day Services Center (DSC), located at 1624 Nicholas Street, adjacent to our overnight shelters.
Our Day Services Center staff works closely with the homeless persons who come to the center, gaining their trust, in order to begin addressing the problems that caused them to be homeless in the first place. Our staff provides to homeless individuals and families the services and resources they need, or puts them in touch with other organizations that can be of assistance. So, what are the services and resources provided by our Day Services Center staff? There are many, including helping persons and families to obtain:
- Affordable and appropriate housing
- Employment and educational opportunities for themselves and for their children
- Money management skills
- Services targeted to veterans of our armed forces
- Domestic violence counseling
- Addiction counseling
- Treatment for mental illness
- Medical health care
- General assistance
- Identification cards
Siena/Francis House's Day Services Center staff also helps persons who are homeless to get in touch – and in many cases – to reunite with estranged family members.
In addition, our Day Services Center is a respite for persons who are homeless to get out of the cold and snow in the winter, the sweltering heat in the summer, and the severe weather in between. It is also a place where persons who are homeless are able to get a bite to eat, use the restroom, take a shower, make a phone call, and store their belongings while they go about their business during the day.
Helping homeless persons obtain the services and resources they need in order to break their own personal cycle of homelessness is the main goal of the Day Services Center. Naturally, this takes time…and takes effort…and can only happen by helping one homeless person (or family) at a time.
